This is working out great with my first grade class. It became the focus of a thematic unit, incorporating math, science, social studies, and reading. The kids loved preparing the cocoons by rinsing the vermipods. They enjoyed taking turns getting the nursery ready, too. They love the tiny size of the hatchlings and are looking forward to releasing the grown up worms in the spring. They feel they are making the world better by doing this project, and they are right.(FYI, Some babies hatched within 24 hours and they were still hatching over a month later!) I hope to do this every year. ... I don't think transferring the babies to the nursery is a job for little kids. A softer brush is needed. We had a problem with babies escaping during the night, so I wish the nursery were escape-proof. After about ten or fifteen are in the nursery I put together a "worm jar" to house them and their friends in. - Jennifer - Merrick
